Dry Point
Inspiration
I was inspired by Kathe Kollwitz self portrait of herself. I loved how she represented her self so strongly through the over lapping of scratching. My favorite part of the piece was how hollow her eyes were and how strongly she represented them. I knew i wanted to recreate something similar to her piece so I decided to take parts of her piece as inspiration and incorporate them into mine. I incorporated her eyes into my piece by making them simple and strong and making everything else be the focus.

I began by sketching out the face of woman and began by picking out what facial features I wanted to add on the piece. After sketching out the face, I added on the hair. The hair was a big factor for this piece because I wanted it to be one of the main focuses. The hair was going to have the most texture in this piece.
The facial features of the woman were simple and clean to have a better representation of her face. I added on texture to the eyebrows to give it a hair like feel to the piece. I also added on texture to the eyeliner and her cheek to draw attention to those facial parts. After sketching I began carving the piece. Craving the hair and texture took the longest time out of the piece. But after I was done, I began by adding ink to the piece. I added a fair amount and distributed it all over the piece. After that I began by cleaning off the extra ink off. Now I was ready to place the plate on the paper and put it on the presser. |
Reflecting on this piece I have to say that I was extremely surprised on the fact that I was able to come out with a good copy on my first try. Critiquing my piece I have to say that I could have done a better job on adding on more texture. I feel as if I would have added more texture to the piece I could have made the piece a lot stronger. I also could have added more texture to the hair but instead of adding waving lines, I could have added on straight lines and over lapped them. Overall I loved this because I feel like I got what I wanted out of it . I wanted this piece to represent a woman who was strong and beautiful.
