Title: Hands Tell Your Story
Medium: Photography Size:60.99× 94.48 cm Exhibition Text: Through these serious of photographs I want to show case how each persons life is showcased through their hands. This piece was inspired by Perry Dilbeck from his serious of photographs of farmer hands. I want to showcase the life of child through there hands and how the world has treated them. |
Perry Dilbeck was my artist inspiration for this piece. His work inspired me to photograph hands. Perry Dilbeck did a serious of photographs on farmer hands. The pictures he took of these hands told peoples stories and automatically inspired me to do the same using people around me. His use of flirted black and white images gave the images a deeper look. Through black and white it sharpened the skin to showcase each crevasse of the hands. The extreme detail of the hands in the photograph serious gave the viewers an automatic story of the persons hands in their head. Perry Dilbeck photographed the farmers holding plants and vegetables to make the connection clear that these hands belonged to farmers and because of the picking for years it was demonstrated in their hands. He also showcased a bit of clothing background a couple of pictures to make an automatic connection as well that these were the hands of farmers.
Process
My process all began by brain storming ideas on who I wanted to photograph. This was difficult to to choose because I had a number of people that would be great for photography. I decide to go with my little brother because I knew it was going to a photograph that anyone can relate to. I decide to photograph him also because Perry Dilbeck photographed the hands of older farmers and through me photographing the hands of a child it would flip the stories. Flipping the stories gives a different perspective in age. I photographed my brother beginning with him having his hands out and having the background be of his shirt and the fence in the back. I did this because it would be a more clear on what I wanted to represent. I then photographed by brother from the side to be able to showcase his height and hands and again make the connection of a child playing outside and their story. After I photographed a serious of poses of my little brother I then followed to edit the picture. I edited the pictures beginning with cropping them and following that with making them black and white. After the picture was filtered I then added darker tones and put a high contrast on them.
Experimentation
This image was my first pose I decided to photograph. I wanted to get as close as possible to the hands and have a strong resemblance to Perry's work. For this image I began my posing my little brother outside to give the background a story and have it connect with the person who's hands are being represented. Placing my brother outside was to give the viewer a connection. A child is normally outside and there hands are dirty by the time their done playing.

I was experimenting photography certain positions to see what was the best postion for the serious of pictures I wanted to do and what best told a story through. I decided to experiment photographing my little brother from his shoulders down to show case his size and clothing.

Reflection
Throughout this project I encountered many set backs and successes. This project was truly based on experimentation. In the begging of the photographing I had a lot of trouble trying to pose my little brother because of the lack of ideas I had. I knew what I wanted to photograph but didn't know how to capture it properly. My first set back was adjusting my camera to capture ever bit of detail in my brothers hand while being clear. I had to a lot of research to see what settings I had to put my camera in. Another problem I had was edting I have a background on edidting so doing basic photo editing was not hard the hard part was using adjustments on a black and white picture to showcase the stains and lines on the hands. As many problems as I came across I also encountered many successes, one of my biggest successes was the ability to photograph the background and incorporate a part of my brothers body. This was a big success because this was exactly what I had in mind. Another of my success was the fact that I was able to get the meaning of my piece clearly. Through the success of my piece and clearly identifying the meaning behind it makes this piece successful.
ACT Questions:
1. I was able to identify the cause -effect relationships between my work and my inspiration by demonstrating my inspiration through using the same pose. The relationship is clearly identified because my inspiration was a black and white photograph and so was mine with the same pose.
2. The overall approach of my theme regarding my inspiration has to be rough sketching. Its rough drawings because Im sketching through a rough technique for all of sketches basing it on my inspiration.
3. The generalizations that I've discovered through my research has to be generalizations on ideas. While I was researching I came across many themes within sketching and saw that everyone has their own way of sketching weather there clean sketchers, to messy sketchers. Everyone has an idea to what sketching means to them..
4. The overall theme to my inspiration is rough/ messy sketching. I choose it this way to best express myself freely and see what I'm cable of doing thorough sketching quickly and messy.
5. The type of conclusions that I came across while reading my research that there is no right way of doing anything when it comes to sketching but more of it being a personal preferences.
