Exhibition Text: I painted this piece inspired by Frida Kahlo's self portrait of her in a red robe. I incorporated my self in a red robe as she did as well and painted myself with simplicity. I wanted to demonstrate myself in a glowing way, just my facial features as the focus.

Self Portrait with a Red Robe By Frida Kahlo. |
Inspiration I was inspired by Frida Kahlo's self portrait of her self in a red robe. The simplicity of her face and how beautiful her skin glows in the painting made me fall in love with this piece.
I knew this piece was a perfect fit for my self portrait because I could demonstrate my self the same way she did. The meaning behind the painting made me fall even more in love with this painting. Frida had painted this piece for her lover Alejandro and gifted his this piece in memory of her. The meaning behind the title of my painting came from the meaning behind this painting. |

Process
I began tracing my self out on the canvas and sketching out important features I wanted to add on to the piece. After sketching everything out i began my creating my skin tone. I mixed a serious of colors to get to the closest one that would match my skin tone. After creating my skin tone I began by applying it to the canvas. I added about 3 layers of my skin tone down before continuing on to contouring.
Countering was a long process that required a number of different shades to blend everything out. I had to make different counter shades for my face so everything would blend out and makes its self look blended.
My eye brows were a long process as well because I had to blend out the begging of the brow and make sure It blended out to the dark end of the brow. The next thing after brows were my eye lashes. I had to feather them out and make them seem realistic.
My lips had to be anther hard part of my painting because I had to use different shades of pinks and brows to count our and high light them. My nose was anther hard part to contour and high light because I had to see were the shading went to make my noise seem a bit slimmer.
My hair and the robe were the last parts that I painted. The top of my hair has light brown incorporated because I wanted to make sure the brown would connect to the brown eyebrows. The bottom of the hair is painted dark brown to contrast the two colors. The robe is all painted in one solid color but I over lapped the color to contour the robe.

Reflection
Reflecting back on this piece made me realize that I could have changed a lot of things. Starting off w adding more to the hair. I could have added a texture feel to the painting & made it seem more realistic. The next thing I would have changed would have been the eye lashes. I could have flared them out more. Overall I think I did a good job, on the piece. I was successful on blending & overlapping the counter colors & highlighting certain areas. I feel like I could have had a different background to add on more depth to the painting. The original painting of Frida had a lot going on in the background and maybe incorporating that could have been a lot better.
